Burden of Proof

According to wikipedia:

Burden of proof is the obligation on a party in an epistemic [knowledge] dispute to provide sufficient warrant for their position [i.e. if a statement is made we usually want them to ‘prove it’]. In any such dispute, both parties will hold a burden of proof  [anyone who tries to deny the statement would need to prove that it is false].

However, their respective burdens of proof will often be unequal or asymmetrical. The burden of proof has been demonstrated to be a useful tool in public debate and scientific methodology.

Basically Yahovah said they would surely die, the enemy said otherwise. Of course we know that Yahovah was telling the truth. Yahovah said:

Isaiah 45:

7 I form the light and create darkness,
I bring prosperity and create disaster;
I, the LORD, do all these things.

22 “Turn to me and be saved,
all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.

24 They will say of me, ‘In the LORD alone
are righteousness and strength.’ ”
All who have raged against him
will come to him and be put to shame.

The asymmetry is that the proof will fall more on one side than another. More proof is required to proof something as true than as false. For example to say that ‘Aliens exist’ requires more evidence than saying ‘Aliens do not exist’, its not simply either/or.

Those who ‘do not know’ have no burden [you cannot prove that you don’t know something], however the introduction of opinions leads to burden.

1 Corinthians 10

13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Everywhere we turn we are provided with opportunities to sin. Some people wonder what the right thing to do is, they do not live up to the standards that Yahovahs wants for us. They’re faith is dwindling if they have it at all. The great thing about our Lord is that he never allows any burden to overcome us.

Matthew 11

28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

To understand the last sentence in the perspective of the Ancient Hebrews basically back then oxen were used to transport goods due to their strength. They would tie up or yoke an older more experienced ox with a less experienced one, and so when they would walk together tied up. If the less experienced ox went off track, being tied together, the older one standing firm would cause the younger one to get back on course. Where Yahouwshua says his burden is light, he is saying that he [as the experienced ox] will not tug us along, he will not be rough, rather he will be very gentle and patient with us. It is up to us to choose to be ‘paired up’  with him. He tells us he is meek [humble in spirit] and lowly [free from pride] in heart. Who wouldn’t want to be paired with him guiding our path?

As the definition mentions, there is more requirement for the one who is affirming something to give proof/evidence. Yahouwshua did this purely by fulfilling prophecy from over a thousand years earlier, he showed us miracles seeing that people want to see ‘signs and wonders’. The Lord says:

Acts 2

19. I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath

John 4

48. Then Jesus said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

Mark 16

17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues

The Lord has in his mercy upon us showed us many signs and wonders, and has even given us the bible to learn of him. He has been in our life from the beginning directing our path, all those ‘coincidences’ that has happened in your life, the amazing highs and the sad lows which you hopefully have grown stronger from were all from him. When you thought you couldnt go on, you couldnt take it and somehow perhaps someone managed to make you smile. The people in your life who have made such a difference and you dont know what you would do without them, its all from him. The only thing is we can’t see it, but we must believe with strong assurance that it is no coincidence.

Isaiah 9

4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

Our Lord has proved himself time and time again, and it is this proof which should make us want to change our life to dedicate it to following his guide, remember his yoke is easy and light.
