Translation of… Taking the Lords Name In Vain

In vain means:

  1. Without success; ending in failure;

It is not so much about disrespecting Yahovahs name but more about misrepresenting him, something many Christians do without even realising it.

First we must be aware that we are created in his image [i.e. we are a shadow of him, and so we carry the responsibility of doing right by him and representing him correctly [by doing his will].

The verse is found in Exodus 20:7

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain for the Lord shall not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain

The hebrew reads

Lo tishsha et shem YHWH ‘eloheykh lashshve’ ki lo’ yenaqqeh YHWH et asher yissa’ et shemow lashshave’

Tisha is actually a changed form of the word nasa’, which means to lift, carry [away], take. A related word is nasha meaning to lend on interest, to be a creditor; to beguile or deceive; a debt.

Shem means name as in character, reputation

Shav means false. empty, vain

Naqah is to be empty, make clean, hold innocent;  by means to leave unpunished, acquit at all [lo means this is in the negative sense]

Explanation

To carry, or lift up a name means to make it well known, to carry it with you. We all carry Yahovahs name [his reputation and character] with us. He tells us to not do this falsely i.e. with emptiness. The other word for lift up is a debt, or to lend with interest. Yahovah wants us to be cultivators on Earth, he wants us to achieve many things. Another interpretation of this is to not take the Lords character and ‘come back’ empty, have not achieved nything. Sort of like the guy with only a few coins who did nothing with them when he could’ve invested them and returned more to the master.

Matthew 25:

The Parable of the Talents

14“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.19“After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.20The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ 21“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22“The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.’ 23“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24“Then the man who had received the one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.25So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28” ‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

We are Yahovahs property and these bodies have been loaned to our spirits and Yahovah will at death turn to us and ask us what we have ‘brought back’. Have you made his great in the Earth? Have you lived by his will and represented him to the maximum, or have you just lived a worldly life contrary to how he wanted us to live and not thinking about him? This is all taking the Lords name in vain i.e. not paying him back with interest, carrying his reputation [representation/image] in a false manner; perhaps even acting like the adversary who deceives and beguiles people hence not even lifting his name, but dragging it through the mud.

The next part says we will by no means go unpunished should we do this; he will not hold us innocent of this. So be aware, its better to know the truth now and do something, then get to the time when it is too late and we are judged. Remember we are not of this world, so don’t worry about anyone or anything, and always know that Yahovah is there to strengthen and help you grow as long as you let him. He will straighten your path for you, all you have to  do is walk it in righteousness.
