Philosophy: Platos Analogy of the Divided Line

This is the divided line

AB represent shadows and reflections of things  in water, solid, smooth and polished bodies [they do not exist]

BC represents the physical things themselves

CD represents mathematical reasoning and objects, lines [not as we draw them but as they are]

DE represents philosophical reasoning [understanding, as the ability to sense, or know something, immediately]

AC is the visible world i.e. Earth which we have illusions nd beliefs of reality. CE is the intelligible world i.e. Heaven where one uses hypotheses of reason only as hypotheses viewing them as steps leading into a world which is above and beyond them going into the first principle of the whole.

This is thought as opposed to senses. Humans are the only animals capable of full rational thought and the ability to put them into full action, to regret, to look back and learn and change. Elephants, whales, dogs, rats etc are smart animals so we shouldnt discredit their abilities. Humans are of course also about to advance in societies.

Plato says that the transient shadows and reflections we receive in the Earth are of the true things that are eternal. When we have jknowledge of the form it is also knowledge of the form of good.

If we take Platos view into consideration, we see why som people have miraculous testimonies of Yahovah, they must have found the form of good whilst the others are just in the shadows.

Plato separates the nous i.e. intuitive thinking, with the dianoia with is rational discursive thinking. Aristotle further split dianoia into

  1. theoretical episteme [our knowledge of things true or false],
  2. techne [the rational method of craftmanship, producing something – an art],
  3. phronesis [the virtue of practical thought-prudence]. He further separates phronesis and Sophia

Sophia is is the ability to think well about the nature of the world, to discern why the world is the way it is. It involves deliberation concerning universal truths.

Phronesis is the capability to consider the mode of action in order to deliver change, especially to enhance the quality of life. It is not simply a skill, however, as it involves not only the ability to decide how to achieve a certain end.

Sophia is given to us via the bible hence there is no need to ask why, rather we need to act prudently as  we apply biblical principles to our lives.

The nous then is what is needed to know of heaven. The nous is the act of consciousness. our faith, it is Gods image and essence e.g. to thinking, love, hate, imagine are all things we do, not things we believe. NB his essence is different from his energies.

We view the world through our eyes and the images we see are from light energy converted to electrical energy. The image is projected to our retina encoded in a signal from the back of our heads where our visual cortex lies. Our voice is merely produced from our voicebox forming sound energy from different vibrations, contortions of the voice box. But where is love, hate, etc? Where is our mind, the thing that gives us our personality? This is our spirit and is bound within our God given physical bodies. It is the person we call ‘me’, ‘me’ isnt an image in the back of our heads. If you try to put yourself inside yourself and think, everything around us, this 3D world is all due to impulses in the back of our brain. Imagine you had never seen before, do you realise if you looked through your eyes things would appear flat? Like looking at a really amazing realistic photo, we only know it has depth through experience, through our ability to put our arms out and not be impeded, but all our arms are doing are obeying electrical signals from  thought in our mind that says ‘move’.

The things of Gods essence arent these abilities rather is something incomprehensible.  The Greek call it Ousia, it is his being, his substance. We can only have some idea of the Forms that Yahovah laid down in existence [through ourselves in his image, through noesis/faith]. Through these forms we get som idea of his ssence but ultimately its too vast to comprehend.

Basically, we are limited to what we know when we only use shadows that do not even exist to explain things of what does exist. When we combine information of what we believe we know, we may come to the truth. This is a form of analogic thinking [see post here and here] whereby we use past experience to aid our current problem. It is seeing patterns in experience, situations and relating them to form a model representing whats real; true; right etc. It is intuitive not rational thus we may not be able to rationally explain [rationality is part of the physical world anyway]. NB our intuition is not a one way street, Yahuwah can interact with us also.

Christians are able to cross this divided line when we put faith into our works [praxis – practice], we will begin to see a transformation. Theosis refers to the attainment of likeness to or union with God, and is the goal of the spiritual life. It is taking us from the world, from the shadows and darknesss and bringing us into the light where we belong. God shares Himself with us so that we conform to what he wants us to be e.g.  righteous, holy. Yahuwah became  man without sin, and he wants to make us be without sin also so we are more like him. He draws us towards him and only our nous can perceive it. Many others will never know.
